Born: Around 484 BC, Athens [Died] c. 423 BC Greek comic playwright. Along with Aristophanes and Eupolis, he is one of the three great classical comedies. His plays combine political satire, fairy tale elements, literary criticism, and parodies of mythology, and are particularly known for their attacks on Pericles, the promoter of war. Aristophanes mocked him as an old drunkard in The Knights, but the following year, in 423, he got his revenge by beating Aristophanes' Clouds in Pytinē (The Wine Bottle). He won nine championships in his lifetime. Only the titles of 28 of his works and some fragments remain.
