Volksschule (English spelling)

Japanese: フォルクスシューレ（英語表記）Volksschule

Elementary schools in Germany and Austria. A general term for the lower four-year Grundschule and the upper four-year Oberstufe. Due to the Hamburg Agreement of 1964, each state called the upper four-year course Hauptschule, extended the duration by one year, and made it a type of secondary education institution, so this term is no longer used legally. The original meaning was national school, and in 1941, Japan changed the name of elementary school, which had been used for 75 years, to national school in Japan (and changed it back to elementary school in 1947), following the example of the Volksschule in Germany, which was an ally at the time.

ドイツ，オーストリアの小学校。下級4年のグルントシューレ Grundschuleと上級4年のオーベルストゥーフェ Oberstufeの総称。 1964年のハンブルク協定により，各州とも上級4年の課程をハウプトシューレ Hauptschuleと呼び，年限も1年延長して中等教育機関の1種とすることになったため，法規上この用語は使われなくなっている。原義は国民学校のことで，1941年日本ではそれまで 75年間用いていた小学校の名称を国民学校に改めたが (1947年再び小学校に戻す) ，これは当時の同盟国であったドイツのフォルクスシューレにならったもの。
