Alcuin - Arukuin (English spelling) Alcuin

Japanese: アルクイン - あるくいん(英語表記)Alcuin
Alcuin - Arukuin (English spelling) Alcuin

A European humanist of the early Middle Ages. Born in York, England. His Latin name was Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus. In 781, he was invited by Charlemagne to travel to the continent, where he managed the court school and library, and made great efforts in improving the education and religious administration of the Frankish Kingdom. He conveyed the heritage of classical culture that had been preserved in British monasteries at the time to the continent, and thus contributed to establishing the foundation of European medieval culture, characterized by a close and tense combination of classical culture, religion, and politics. His works are diverse, ranging from manuals on the seven liberal arts of ancient sciences, such as grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, and music, to philosophical works such as On the Nature of the Soul and theological works on the Trinity, all of which are clear and of a high academic standard. His numerous letters are also valuable materials for understanding the historical situation of the time.
