Theatre du Marais (English)

...The predecessor of the company was the comedy troupe of the great Molière. After Molière's death in 1773, the company continued to exist by absorbing actors from the dissolved Théâtre du Marais, but then merged with the Hôtel de Bourgogne (Théâtre de Bourgogne), which was the home of tragedy at the time, through the abovementioned royal decree, and was established as a royal theater company with the exclusive rights to perform in Paris and its surrounding areas (with the exception of Italian theaters), with the tragedies of Corneille and Racine, and comedies of Molière as its assets. It was originally based at the Théâtre des Guennegos on the left bank of the Seine, but in 1787 it moved to the Fossées Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in 1771 to the Tuileries Palace, and in 1782 to the theater where the Odéon is now located. ...

...In this way, the "King's Theatre" led by Valleran Le Comte and others used it to premiere plays by A. Hardy, J. Rotroux, and J. Melet. In 1634, the rival Théâtre du Marais was founded, and it dominated the theatrical world until P. Corneille's works were performed by a troupe led by Mon(t)dory (1594-1653). After Mon(t)dory retired from the theatre due to illness (1636), the theatre regained its strength and the "King's Theatre of Burgundy" led by Floridor (?-1672) was founded and gained popularity.
