The capital of Zapukhwan Aimak (province) on the banks of the Bogdin Gol River, a tributary of the Zapukhwan River, in western Mongolia. It was called Japlant from 1926 to 1961. It is located at an altitude of 1,500m. It originated as a base established by the Qing Dynasty in the early 17th century, and was the second largest city in Mongolia before the revolution, and flourished as the center of the Qing Dynasty's control over Outer Mongolia.
