In Sanskrit, it is called Gdhrakūa, and is also transliterated as Girākūssen. During the time of Shakyamuni, it was one of the five mountains surrounding Rajagriha (now Rājgir), the capital of the Indian kingdom of Magadha. It is said that the name comes from the fact that the peak resembles an eagle's beak, or that an eagle lived on the peak. Shakyamuni often stayed here and is said to have preached many sutras, including the Lotus Sutra, the Large Sutra of Immeasurable Life, and the Sutra of Contemplation of Immeasurable Life. The travelogues of Faxian (335?-421?) and Xuanzang (600/602-664) mention the ruins of a brick preaching hall on the mountain's summit. In Japan, it has come to symbolize the ideal world, known as "Sacred Mountain Pure Land" or "Sacred Mountain Actual Land."
