Born on March 14, 1877. Worked at Mitsui Gofukuten (now Mitsukoshi) and founded the laundry business Hakuyosha in 1906. The following year he developed Japan's first dry cleaning technology. He expanded his business by establishing factories in Tokyo and Osaka. As a Christian, he also worked in evangelism and publishing. He passed away on April 10, 1972. He was 95 years old. He was from Niigata Prefecture. His maiden name was Funazaki. He wrote his autobiography, "My Christian Faith and My Experiences."
