Tove Jansson

Japanese: ヤンソン - やんそん(英語表記)Tove Jansson
Tove Jansson

A Finnish female painter and children's author. Of Swedish descent, she writes in Swedish. While studying painting in Sweden and France, she contributed cover art to the political magazine Garm in the 1930s. She then made her debut as an illustrator and author with The Little Troll and the Great Flood (1945), which featured Moomintroll, the character she had drawn on the cover instead of her signature. She subsequently published eight fantastic Moomin stories, including Comet in Moominvalley (1947). November in Moominvalley, published in 1970, was the last work in the series. Her works, set on the Finnish seaside, gently tell of loneliness, love, understanding, and comfort, and have been widely recognized around the world. She has received the Rudolf Koivu Award from Finland, the Niels Holgersson Award and the Elsa Beskow Award from Sweden, and the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1966. The Moomin series has been translated into over 30 languages, and is said to have sold over 10 million copies in Japan. It has also been adapted into animated television series three times since 1969, and the 1990-91 anime series is said to have created a boom in its native Finland. Her other works include the picture book "And Then What Happens?" (1952), the girls' novel "Sofia's Summer" (1971), the autobiographical novel "The Sculptor's Daughter" (1968), and the short story collection "The Listening Woman" (1972).
