A state founded by the Burgunds in the 5th and 6th centuries, centered around the Rhône River. 443-534. A Germanic tribe originally from Scandinavia, the Burgunds had been settled on both sides of the Main River since 300, but after successfully invading the Roman Empire in 406, they colonized the area west of the Rhine as an ally of Rome in 413. In 436, they attempted to expand their influence westward, but suffered a devastating blow at the hands of the Roman general Aetius, who had been reinforced by the Huns.
