Liturgical music

Japanese: 典礼音楽 - てんれいおんがく（英語表記）liturgical music

In the broad sense, it is music used in any religious ceremony. In the narrow sense, it is music used in the liturgy, the official Christian worship service. The concept of liturgy has been used in the Roman Catholic Church since the 16th century, initially referring simply to the "Mass," but since the 19th century it has come to refer to the entirety of formally ordered worship services. Therefore, liturgical music must be understood as music used in such worship services. It includes masses, requiems, psalms from the breviary, canticles, motets, etc. In the Greek Orthodox Church, "liturgy" refers only to the "Mass."

広義では，あらゆる宗教的儀式に用いられる音楽。狭義では，キリスト教の公式礼拝としての典礼に使用される音楽。ローマ・カトリック教会では 16世紀以来，典礼という概念が用いられ，当初は単に「ミサ」をさすだけであったが，19世紀以来，正式に秩序立てられた礼拝の総体をさすものとなった。したがって，典礼音楽もそのような礼拝に使用される音楽と解されなければならない。そこにはミサ曲，レクイエム，聖務日課の詩篇，カンティクム，モテトなどが含まれる。なお，ギリシア正教会では，「典礼」は「ミサ」だけをさす。
