Yayako Dance - Yayako Dance

Japanese:
Yayako Dance - Yayako Dance

A small singing and dancing performing art performed by yayako (young girls) from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. It is known as a performing art that was performed by Okuni of Izumo before she founded Kabuki dance. The earliest document that can be traced back to this day is a record dated September 9, 1581 in the Oyudonoue no Nikki. The specific content is unclear due to very limited sources, but it was undoubtedly a stage performance performed by young girls. There are apparently three types of performing arts that were called by this name:

(1) A type of group dance that was performed in the streets before it became a stage performance. It was so named because it was danced by girls and children.

(2) A general term for the performing arts performed by Okuni and others before the name "Kabuki dance" was given.

(3) The name of a repertoire that existed in early Kabuki dance.

It is an extremely important form of performing art when it comes to understanding the history of the establishment of Kabuki.
