The name of a region in Nunavut Territory in northern Canada. The region includes the northern part of northwestern Hudson Bay, the islands in Hudson Bay and James Bay. Area: 590,000 square kilometers (including approximately 25,000 square kilometers of fresh water). Population: approximately 30,000. Established in 1876. In 1920, about half of the southern part was divided into the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario, and the current border was decided.
