〘Noun〙 One of the Buddhist ceremonies at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. An annual festival held on the 15th of the 8th lunar month (currently the 15th of September). It was started by the monk Anshu in 863 , and after 1070 it became similar to the Imperial visit ceremony. Raw fish and live birds are released into the mountains and rivers, and prayers are made for the happiness of the emperor and shogun, and for peace throughout the world. It was discontinued after 1486 , but was revived in 1679 , and renamed the Mid-Autumn Festival in 1868 , and is now called the Iwashimizu Festival. Otokoyama Hachiman Festival. 〘名〙 石清水八幡宮の法会の一つ。例祭として陰暦八月一五日(現在は九月一五日)に行なわれる放生会。貞観五年(八六三)僧安宗により始められ、延久二年(一〇七〇)以後は行幸の式に準じた。生魚、生鳥などを山や川に放ち、天皇および将軍の幸福、天下泰平を祈願する。文明一八年(一四八六)以後断絶、延宝七年(一六七九)再興、明治元年(一八六八)仲秋祭と改称、現在は、石清水祭という。男山八幡祭。八幡の法生会。《季・秋》※日本紀略‐天暦二年(948)一〇月一二日「勘二石清水放生会日時一」
