…Influenced by Louis Deluc (1890-1924), he published works such as “The Movie” (1921) and “Film Theory on Mount Etna” (1926), which developed the theory of “photogénie.” He was also active as an avant-garde director, and his most famous work is “The House of Usher” (1928), a fantastical visual depiction of Edgar Allan Poe's horror novel. He was captured by the German Gestapo during World War II, but narrowly escaped exile, and after the war he taught at the Institut Supérieure de la Cinema in Paris. …
