Glycerin - Glycerin

Also known as glycerol. It is a colorless, transparent, viscous liquid that is odorless and sweet. Glycerin and concentrated glycerin are listed in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia. A 50% aqueous solution is used as an enema to treat constipation, and is also used as a base for suppositories. Because it has moisturizing and demulcent properties, it is often used as an ingredient in ointments, creams, lotions, and other liniments to protect and soften the skin and mucous membranes. It is also used as an injection for treating cerebral edema and for lowering intraocular and cerebrospinal pressure. In the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, it is included in potassium glycerin solution, which is used to treat cracks and chapped skin, compound iodine-glycerin, which is applied as a bactericide and disinfectant, dental iodine-glycerin, phenol-zinc oxide liniment, and dental triozinc paste.

別名グリセロール。無色透明の粘性の液で、においはなく、甘い。日本薬局方にはグリセリンと濃グリセリンが収載されている。50％水溶液が便秘の治療に浣腸(かんちょう)用として用いられるほか、坐薬(ざやく)の基剤中に配合される。保湿性、粘滑性を有するので、皮膚や粘膜の保護、軟化の目的で軟膏(なんこう)、クリーム、化粧水など塗布剤の原料として繁用されている。また注射用として脳浮腫(ふしゅ)の治療、眼圧、脳脊髄(せきずい)圧を下げるのに点滴静脈注射として用いられる。日本薬局方製剤には、皮膚のひび、あかぎれなどにあれ止めとして用いられるグリセリンカリ液、殺菌・消毒剤として塗布する複方ヨード・グリセリン、歯科用ヨード・グリセリンのほか、フェノール・亜鉛華リニメント、歯科用トリオジンクパスタに配合されている。
