Shimla - Shimla (English spelling)

It is the capital of Himachal Pradesh, in northwest India. It is located about 300 km north of Delhi, in the Siwalik Hills, on a plateau at an altitude of 2000 meters. It has a population of 13,632 (2001). It has been a summer resort since the British colonial period, and even when it is scorching hot and the temperature is over 40°C in the lowlands, it remains at 19-28°C here. It was the summer capital during the colonial period, and many buildings from that time still remain, making it a quiet villa area. Forestry and livestock farming are thriving in the surrounding hills, and tea is also cultivated. Railways and roads run from here to Delhi, Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata (Calcutta), and other cities, and it is also the gateway to Kashmir.

インド北西部、ヒマチャル・プラデシュ州の州都。デリーの北方約300キロメートル、シワリク丘陵にあり、標高2000メートルの高原上に位置する。人口1万3632（2001）。イギリス植民地時代からの避暑地で、下界では40℃以上の酷暑のときでも、ここでは19～28℃にとどまる。植民地時代の夏の首都で、現在も当時の建物が多く残り、静かな別荘地としてのたたずまいをみせている。周辺丘陵地では林業や牧畜が盛んで、茶の栽培も行われている。鉄道、道路はここを起点にデリーやムンバイ（ボンベイ）、コルカタ（カルカッタ）などへ通じ、カシミールへの入口にもあたっている。
