Housekeeper - Gecko

Japanese: 家守 - やもり

〘 noun 〙① To look after a house. To protect a house. Also, the person who does so. [Bunmeihon Setsuyoshu (Muromachi period)]② In the Edo period, a person who mainly worked in the town, managed the land on behalf of the landlord or owner, collected rent and store rent , and performed other town duties such as guarding the owner. Also called a steward. Also, land tenants were called oya or yashiki. ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Koshoku Mankintan (1694) , vol. 4 "When Yabei the housekeeper (gecko) pestered him to pay the two months' rent that was overdue."
