The University of California

A collective name for the state universities of California, consisting of nine campuses (ten in 2005). Founded in 1868. Under the state's higher education plan, California has 109 public junior colleges (community colleges) that open the door to higher education to everyone, and 23 state universities that focus on undergraduate education, while placing emphasis on graduate education and research functions. Former president Clark Kerr (1911-2003) said that this huge and complex organization should be called a multiversity, which must serve a variety of purposes and functions, rather than a university, which is integrated with a common purpose.

Admission to the University of California (UC) is only available to students who are ranked in the top 12.5% ​​of the state's high school grades or national test averages, or in the top 4% of their high school grades. It has huge campuses and facilities in Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles (UCLA), Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco, each of which functions as a comprehensive university with its own unique characteristics. In 2005, the 10th campus was opened in Merced.

The university is headquartered in Oakland, and is run by a president under the supervision of a 26-member board of trustees, with a chancellor at each campus. All campuses maintain high standards in the United States, but Berkeley is particularly known for its academic excellence and the quality of its faculty and students, and is always competing with prestigious private schools such as Harvard and Stanford for the top spot in graduate school quality rankings. As of 2002, there are 7,785 full-time faculty members and 188,301 students. In 1995, under the Republican governor who also serves as chairman of the board of trustees, affirmative action (a preferential admission policy for minorities such as African-Americans and other ethnic minority groups) was abolished, causing a great stir throughout the United States. In fact, the number of minority students enrolled has decreased since then, and the policy is being reviewed.

アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州の9か所（2005年には10か所）のキャンパスからなる州立総合大学群の総称。1868年創設。同州の高等教育計画により、万人に高等教育の門戸を開放する109校の公立短大（コミュニティ・カレッジ）群、学部教育を中心とする23校の州立大学群と機能分担をしつつ、大学院教育や研究機能を重視している。元総長クラーク・カーClark Kerr（1911―2003）は、この巨大・複雑な機構は、共通の目的に統合された総合大学（ユニバーシティ）ではなく多様な目的・機能に奉仕しなければならない複合大学（マルティバーシティmultiversity）とよばれるべきだといっていた。

　カリフォルニア大学（UC）への入学資格は、州内の高校の成績や全国テストの平均から上位12.5％以上、あるいは高校内での成績順位が上位4％以内のランクにある学生にだけ認められている。バークリー、デービス、アーバイン、ロサンゼルス（UCLA）、リバーサイド、サン・ディエゴ、サンタ・バーバラ、サンタ・クルス、サンフランシスコに巨大なキャンパスと施設をもち、それぞれが個性や特色を発揮した総合大学として機能している。2005年には、10番目のキャンパスをマーセッドに開校。

　オークランドに本部があり、26人からなる大学理事会の管理のもとに総長Presidentが全体を運営し、各キャンパスごとに学長Chancellorが置かれている。いずれのキャンパスもアメリカで高い水準を保っているが、なかでもバークリー校の学問的卓越性と教授陣や学生の質は高く、大学院の質のランキング調査では、つねにハーバード大学やスタンフォード大学などの名門私学とアメリカのトップを争っている。2002年現在、常勤教員数は7785人、学生数18万8301人。1995年、理事会の議長を兼ねる共和党員の知事の下、アファーマティブ・アクションaffirmative action（アフリカ系をはじめとする少数民族諸集団などのマイノリティに対する入学優遇策）が廃止され、全米で大きな波紋をよんだ。実際、その後のマイノリティ学生の入学者は減少し、その見直しが図られている。
