A desert where bedrock is exposed without being covered by sand or gravel. Sand and gravel are only thin in places, and eroded surfaces without sand dunes are exposed. Here, large temperature changes between day and night act directly on the exposed rocks, causing intense mechanical weathering. In the Sahara region, it is called hamada.
