braccio

Japanese: braccio
braccio

...This was passed down through the Latin name cubitum (meaning elbow) to the system of modern European degrees (British cubit, about 46 cm), and gave rise to units double that (British ell, German Elle, etc.), and units double that (which can also be interpreted as the distance between the tips of two outstretched hands, as seen in Chinese and Japanese fathom, British fathom, German Klafter, and French brasse). However, it seems that there have been some confusions over the years, and Italian braccio and Dutch el have been interpreted as either the actual length of the arm or two or four times that length, causing confusion. In addition, hasta, one of the ancient Indian degrees, is also derived from the length of the arm, and its actual length is understood to be about 50 cm.
