The vassal system

Japanese: 従士制度 - じゅうしせいど

A system of lord-vassal relationships with a strong military flavor that originated in ancient Germanic customs in Western Europe and was based on a duty of loyalty. According to Tacitus, nobles took on the children of freemen as retainers, providing them with food, clothing, weapons, and war horses, and in return demanding military service. Compared to similar Celtic and Roman systems, this system had a stronger ethical flavor as a relationship between freemen, but it gradually became hereditary and became the forerunner of the feudal vassal system, and from the Middle Ages onwards it was combined with the beneficium system to bring about the establishment of the feudal system.
