Phrygian or Thracian god. In Greece he is often identified with Dionysus or his predecessor Zagreus, and sometimes with Zeus. The cult of Sabaoth, introduced into Greece around the 5th century BCE in conjunction with the cults of Cybele and Attis, was characterized by narcissistic frenzy, with snakes playing an important role. At the end of the 2nd century BCE, the Jews of Asia Minor identified him with Zeus, and then with their god the Lord of hosts, Sabaoth.
