These are stone carvings of scriptures from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. They were intended to show a standard for scriptures and to be passed down to future generations. The first was the Xiping Stone Scripture (also called the Hongdu Stone Scripture, the Single Character Stone Scripture, or the Modern Character Stone Scripture), which was built outside the University Gate and was completed in 182 (Kowa 6) after an imperial decree issued by Emperor Ling of the Later Han Dynasty in 175 (Xiping 4). Later, there were the Zhengshi Stone Scripture (also called the Three Character Stone Scripture or the Three Body Stone Scripture) from the Zhengshi period (240-248) of the Wei Dynasty, the Kaisei Stone Scripture completed in 837 (Kaicheng 2 of the Tang Dynasty), and the Chengdu Stone Scripture (also called the Yidu Stone Scripture or the Guangzheng Stone Scripture) from 951 (Guangzheng 14 of Later Shu). In Buddhism, there are the Taishan Sutra, Shiyu Kongo Sutra, Soraizan Eibutsugai Daihannya Sutra, Fangshan Unju Temple Stone Sutra, etc. In Taoism, there are the Yizhou Dao Dao Jing Stele from 708 (Jinglong 2 of the Tang Dynasty) and the Gyochu Dao Dao Jing Stele from 735 (Kaiyuan 23).
