A Netherlandish composer. His birthplace is unknown. There are many unknowns about his career. He is believed to have traveled to Italy at a young age, and was active in Florence and Rome. In Florence, he had connections with the Medici family. In 1540, he became a singer in the Sistine Chapel choir in Rome, where he became friends with Michelangelo. He then moved to France, where he worked in the French king's court chapel and other places. He died in Paris. His forte was secular song, and like his contemporaries in the Netherlandish school, his works reflected the regional characteristics of Italy, where he was active. Many of his approximately 200 madrigals were written in four parts, and show a rich sense of harmony. During his time in France, the number of French chansons increased, and he contributed to the development of French chanson. He also wrote religious songs such as masses.

フランドル楽派の作曲家。生地不詳。その経歴にも不明の点が多い。若くしてイタリアに赴いたとみられ，フィレンツェやローマで活動。フィレンツェではメディチ家と関係をもった。1540年ローマのシスティナ礼拝堂聖歌隊の歌手となり，同地でミケランジェロと親交を結ぶ。その後フランスに移り，フランス国王の宮廷礼拝堂などで活躍。パリで死去した。その本領は世俗歌曲にあり，同時代のフランドル楽派の作曲家たちと同じく，作品は活動地イタリアの地域性を反映させるものとなった。約200曲のマドリガーレ（マドリガル）の多くは４声部で書かれ，充実した和声感を示す。フランス時代からはフランス語のシャンソンが増え，フランス・シャンソンの発展に貢献した。ほかにミサ曲などの宗教曲がある。
