This case occurred during the American Civil War, and was fought between Britain and the United States until after the war. In 1872, the International Court of Arbitration ruled that Britain lost the case. The Alabama was a warship built in Britain at the request of the Confederate Army, and during the war it was engaged in capturing ships for the Union Army. The supply of such ships was criticized by the Union Army and by the United States after unification, as a violation of British neutrality. This case played an important role in the development of neutrality laws and international courts.
