Foshan

A prefecture-level city in central Guangdong Province, China. It is adjacent to the southwest of the provincial capital, Guangzhou, and has jurisdiction over five city districts, including Sanshui District, Chancheng District, and Gaoming District (as of 2016). Its abbreviation is Zen. It has a population of 3,856,100 (2014).

It was once known as one of the four major towns in China, along with Hankou Town in Hubei Province, Jingdezhen Town in Jiangxi Province, and Zhuxian Town in Henan Province. It is currently the center of the silk weaving industry in the province, and is famous for its handicrafts, including Shiwan pottery, paper cutting, decorative lanterns, incense, and New Year paintings. As a satellite city of Guangzhou, the city is also developing in industries such as steel, chemicals, and machinery. Many Japanese auto parts manufacturers, including Denso and Toyota Automatic Loom Works, have established bases in the city, making it an important base in the economic zone centered on Guangzhou. It is connected to Guangzhou by the Guangzhou-Sanshui Line, and plays a central role in bus and water transport in the Pearl River Delta.

The city is home to the ancestral temple built during the Northern Song Dynasty, and is also the birthplace of the traditional Cantonese opera.

中国、広東(カントン)省中部の地級市。省都広州(こうしゅう)の南西に隣接し、三水(さんすい)区、禅城(ぜんじょう)区、高明(こうめい)区など5市轄区を管轄する（2016年時点）。略称は禅。人口385万6100（2014）。

　かつて湖北(こほく)省の漢口鎮(かんこうちん)、江西(こうせい)省の景徳鎮(けいとくちん)、河南(かなん)省の朱仙鎮(しゅせんちん)とともに四大鎮の一つとして知られた商工業都市である。現在は省内の絹織物工業の中心地で、石湾鎮(せきわんちん)の陶器をはじめ剪紙(せんし)（切紙）、飾り提灯(ちょうちん)、線香、年画（吉祥(きちじょう)画）などの手工芸が盛んである。また、広州の衛星都市として鉄鋼、化学、機械などの工業も発達している。日本からもデンソー、豊田自動織機をはじめとする自動車部品メーカーが多数進出しており、広州を中心とする経済圏の重要拠点となっている。交通は広三線（広州―三水）で広州と結ばれ、バスおよび水運では珠江(しゅこう)デルタの中心的役割を占める。

　市内には北宋(ほくそう)時代に創建された祖廟(そびょう)がある。また、伝統劇である粤劇(えつげき)発祥の地でもある。
