A prefecture-level city in central Guangdong Province, China. It is adjacent to the southwest of the provincial capital, Guangzhou, and has jurisdiction over five city districts, including Sanshui District, Chancheng District, and Gaoming District (as of 2016). Its abbreviation is Zen. It has a population of 3,856,100 (2014). It was once known as one of the four major towns in China, along with Hankou Town in Hubei Province, Jingdezhen Town in Jiangxi Province, and Zhuxian Town in Henan Province. It is currently the center of the silk weaving industry in the province, and is famous for its handicrafts, including Shiwan pottery, paper cutting, decorative lanterns, incense, and New Year paintings. As a satellite city of Guangzhou, the city is also developing in industries such as steel, chemicals, and machinery. Many Japanese auto parts manufacturers, including Denso and Toyota Automatic Loom Works, have established bases in the city, making it an important base in the economic zone centered on Guangzhou. It is connected to Guangzhou by the Guangzhou-Sanshui Line, and plays a central role in bus and water transport in the Pearl River Delta. The city is home to the ancestral temple built during the Northern Song Dynasty, and is also the birthplace of the traditional Cantonese opera.
