A marine fish of the family Scleractidae in the order Perciformes. It has a rounded snout similar to the Scleractinian, but its body is slightly longer and its eyes are larger than those of the Scleractinian. It also has a very short spine on its dorsal fin. Medai is the name used in Tokyo and Enoshima, but it is also called Mena (Muroto) with the same meaning, and Daruma (Kochi, Kinan) because of its large eyes and the shape of its head. Adult fish are light brown in color, and some are reddish, but juveniles are blackish with yellowish wavy stripes on their sides, and are called Kuromatsu (Amami).
