The capital of the Republic of Buryatia in the eastern part of the Russian Federation. Population 365,000 (1993). Located 75 km east of Lake Baikal, on the Trans-Siberian Railway, it is the starting point of the railway and highway to Mongolia and is known as a key point for transporting goods and passengers to Mongolia. It is also a river port at the confluence of the Selenga and Uda rivers and has an airport. It began as Udinsk, a wintering base for the Cossacks, in 1666 and developed into a city around the Verkhneudinsk Fortress, which was built in 1689. ロシア連邦東部,ブリヤート共和国の首都。人口36万5000(1993)。バイカル湖の東方75km,シベリア鉄道の沿線にあり,モンゴルに通ずる鉄道・自動車道の起点で,モンゴルとの貨客輸送の要衝として知られる。セレンガ川とウダ川の交流点にある河港でもあり,飛行場もある。1666年にコサックの越冬基地ウジンスクUdinskとしてはじまり,89年にできたベルフネウジンスク城塞の周辺に都市として発展した。19世紀の後半にはザバイカリエの一大商業中心地であった。
