The first colony in New England (present-day eastern Massachusetts) was founded by the Pilgrim Fathers, who traveled to America on the Mayflower in 1620. Although they were unable to obtain a Royal Charter, the Mayflower Compact was drafted and signed on November 11 of the same year, which became the legal basis for colonial rule. The winter in the New World was harsh, and about half of the people fell ill. With the help of the Native Americans, the people began farming, and had their first harvest the following fall, but food shortages continued for several years.
