The base unit of length in the imperial system. Its symbol is yd. It is defined as 0.9144 meters. It originated from the double cubit of the ancient Orient, but the name is said to come from the girdle. One yard is equal to 3 feet (36 inches). There are many legends about its origin, including one that it was the length from the tip of Henry I's nose to the tip of his thumb, and another that it was the length of the Anglo-Saxon waist. A standard scale was created during the reign of Elizabeth I, and a new prototype, the Imperial Standard Yard, was created in 1855. However, there were some differences between the United States and Commonwealth countries, so 0.9144 meters was decided as the scientific agreement value between the countries in 1958, and was adopted by the British Standards Institution in 1963.
