This hat is primarily for men, modeled after a stiff felt hat made by British milliner William Bowler in 1850. It has a narrow brim and a round, low crown. It was worn for city wear and business, as well as for formal riding. In England it is called a bowler, and in America it is called a derby. Its name comes from the fact that the 12th Earl of Derby wore one when he appeared at the Derby racecourse, which he founded. It began to be worn in Japan in the early Meiji period. From the 1880s onwards, various types of hats were suddenly adopted as a must-have for short-haired heads, and the bowler hat, along with the frock coat and cane, was worn as a typical part of gentlemen's attire until the early Showa period.
