Magoshichiro Harada

Japanese: 原田孫七郎 - はらだ・まごしちろう
Magoshichiro Harada
Years of birth: unknown. A trader from the early modern period. A member of the family of Harada Kiemon and a subordinate. He was engaged in trade with the Philippines, lived in Manila, and was fluent in Spanish. In 1591, he carried a letter from Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the regent, urging the Philippines to pay tribute. Magoshichiro was a man of low social status, but Hideyoshi threatened to send a warship if Magoshichiro did not comply with his request. Dasmariñas, governor of the Philippines, did not want to cause trouble, even though Magoshichiro was merely a merchant, so he treated him with courtesy and had him deliver a reply to Hideyoshi in 1592. He also sent Dominican priest Juan Cobo and others to Japan as return envoys. No other details about Magoshichiro are known. <References> Murakami Naojiro (ed.), "Ikoku tsūkanshō" (Collection of Letters from Foreign Countries), Murakami Naojiro, "Nihon to Filipinos" (Japan and the Philippines)
