The first pilgrimage (autumn 1684 to summer 1685), known as the "Katsushi Ginkō," produced the result of his encounter with the Nagoya Renshu (a group of poets), "Winter Day" (1684), and his subsequent pilgrimages featured hokku (a poem written in the style of a winter verse) without any pseudo-renga haiku. The second collection of seasonal haiku from Bashoan, "Atsume-ku" (completed in 1687), is a counterpart to the "Katsushi Ginkō," which has the character of a collection of seasonal haiku written on a journey. After going through the pseudo-kan style of poetry and the pseudo-renga style of expression, he arrived at a style that mixed Japanese and Chinese traditions while also eliminating any sense of "pseudo," such as "An old pond, a frog jumps in, the sound of water." ...
