…An ukiyo-e artist from the mid-Edo period. He was adopted by the owner of the Nukaya inn in Kodenmacho, Edo, and took the name Shichibei. He also went by the names Shuuha and Shinodo. He is said to have been a pupil of Nishimura Shigenaga, and some say his original name was Nishimura Magosaburo Shigenobu, but this is not certain. He was active mainly from the Kanpo to Horeki periods (1741-64), and gained popularity for his beni-e and beni-zuri-e paintings of beautiful genres. He excelled in vertically long painting formats such as pillar paintings and wide pillar paintings, and painted many nude and semi-nude beauties, commonly known as "abunae."
