[1] 〘名〙① 山の中にある田。山間の田。山田の代(しろ)。《季・秋》※古事記（712）下・歌謡「あしひきの夜麻陀(ヤマダ)を作り山高み下樋を走せ」② 「やまだりゅう（山田流）」の略。[2][一] 福岡県中部の地名。遠賀川の上流域にある。筑豊炭田南部の炭鉱都市として発展したが、石炭合理化によって衰微。昭和二九年（一九五四）市制。[二] 常陸国（茨城県）の古郷名。現在の常陸太田市北部。久慈川の支流、山田川の流域にあたる。[三] 奈良県桜井市南西部の地名。古代、山田寺があった。※万葉（８Ｃ後）一三・三二七六「百足らず山田の道を波雲の愛(うつく)し妻と語らはず別れし来れば」[四] 三重県伊勢市の地区名。伊勢神宮外宮の門前町で、祠官宅を中心に形成された。[五] 兵庫県小野市の地名。山田ノ里。
