A bridge over the Sumida River between Azumabashi in Sumida Ward, Tokyo and Asakusa in Taito Ward, Tokyo, and also the name of a district in the western part of Sumida Ward. It consists of Azumabashi 1-3 chome. The bridge was first built in 1774 (An'ei 3) and was called Okawabashi. The wooden bridge was washed away in a major flood in 1885 (Meiji 18), and was replaced by an iron bridge in 1887. However, because the floor was made of wooden boards, it caused a great disaster during the Great Kanto Earthquake. The current bridge was completed in 1931 (Showa 6), and is 150 meters long and 20 meters wide. On the Asakusa side, there is Sumida Park and a water bus (sightseeing boat) pier.
