Al Kawākibī (English spelling)

Syrian thinker.
Originally from Aleppo.
Ala'abe nationalist thinker. He was from a distinguished family and a disciple of Muhammad Abduh. After working as an official in the Ottoman Empire, he became a writer. He was detained for harshly criticizing the tyranny of Abdul Hamid II in his journalism, and in 1898 he was exiled from Syria and moved to Cairo, where he published an article in the magazine Manar arguing for Islamic reform. He traveled widely, including to Yemen and Zanzibar. He advocated Arab unity and radical reform, including for Christians and Jews. His works include "The Nature of Tyranny" and "Mecca".

アラアブ民族主義思想家。名門の出身でムハンマド・アブドゥフの弟子。オスマン帝国の官吏をした後、文筆活動をする。アブデュルハミト2世の専制をジャーナリズムで厳しく批判した為拘禁され、1898年にシリアを追放されカイロに移住し、イスラム改革の論陣を「マナール」誌で張った。イエメン、ザンジバル等も広く旅行した。キリスト教徒、ユダヤ教徒も含めてアラブの団結と急進的な改革を主張した。著作に「専制の性質」「メッカ」等がある。
