A principality in medieval Russia. When Kievan Rus began to fragment in the mid-11th century, this principality in the northeast was the first to show a strong tendency towards independence, and in the late 12th century it claimed the title of Grand Prince separately from Kievan Rus. In 1299, the metropolitan seat of Russia was transferred from Kievan Rus to Vladimir. In the mid-14th century, southwestern Russia, including Kievan Rus, was annexed by Poland and Lithuania, and Vladimir played a symbolic role in Russian unification, even if only nominally, and occupied a central position in Russia under Tatar rule.
