Fact - Reality

A kabuki directing term. It refers to the performances, productions, and scenes that express as realistically as possible events that could actually occur in human life. It is the opposite of "aragoto," which exaggerates the superhuman powers of heroes, gods, Buddhas, and monsters, and "wagoto," which focuses on the love stories of graceful playboys. A good example is "Kiou Higa," in which loyal retainer Oniou Shinzaemon plays an active role in "Soga Kyogen," which deals with the revenge of the Soga brothers. It can also refer to honest and sensible characters who take the lead in such scenes. Representative roles include Oboshi Yuranosuke from "Chushingura" and Takebe Genzo from "Sugawara." An actor who excels in this type of role is called a "jitsushi." Furthermore, within the genre of jitsuji plays, characters with a gentler character, such as Kajiwara Kagetoki in "Ishikiri Kajiwara" and Saito Sanemori in "Nunobikinotaki," are sometimes called "Wajito," meaning that they are jitsuji plays with a Japanese flavor added to them.

歌舞伎(かぶき)演出用語。人間の生活のなかで実際にありうる事件を、なるべく写実的に表現する演技・演出・場面などをいう。豪傑や神仏・妖怪(ようかい)の超人的な力を誇張して演じる「荒事(あらごと)」や、優美な色男をその恋愛描写中心に演じる「和事(わごと)」に対するもので、曽我(そが)兄弟の仇討(あだうち)を扱った「曽我狂言」のなかで忠臣鬼王(おにおう)新左衛門が活躍する「鬼王貧家」などは適例。また、こういう場面で中心になって動く実直で分別に富んだ役柄をさすこともあり、『忠臣蔵』の大星(おおぼし)由良之助、『菅原(すがわら)』の武部源蔵などは代表的な役である。この種の役柄を得意とする俳優を実事師とよぶ。なお、実事の系統のなかで、『石切梶原(いしきりかじわら)』の梶原景時(かげとき)や『布引滝(ぬのびきのたき)』の斎藤実盛(さねもり)など、やわらかみのある役柄を、和事の味を加えた実事という意味で「和実」とよぶこともある。
