Born: September 4, 1768, Ille-et-Vilaine, Saint-Malo [Died] July 4, 1848. Paris. French novelist and politician. Born into an old noble family in Brittany. Losing his rank as a second lieutenant during the French Revolution, he traveled to America alone in 1791. Returning to France, he joined the counter-revolutionary army, was wounded, and fled to England (1793). Returning to France in 1800, he took up a public post under Napoleon, but was unable to get along with the French, and resigned in 1804. With the Restoration of the Monarchy, he returned to politics, and served as a senator, ambassador to England, and foreign minister. His main work is Le Génie du christianisme (1802), and the short pieces Atala (01) and René, both of which are famous. Other works published posthumously include Mémoires d'outre-tombe (48-50). His colorful descriptions and passionate eloquence had a great influence on Romanticism.
