Located in the upper reaches of the Ooi River in Kyoto Prefecture today, this refers to a vast forest that includes the Yamaguni and Kuroda areas of Kyohoku-cho, Kitakuwada-gun, and the Hanase and Hirokawara areas of Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City. According to a book of history of local samurai and headmen of the Yamaguni Manor submitted to Maeda Gen'i just before the Taiko's land survey of this region in 1587 (Tensho 15), entitled "The Allocation of Fields and Official Ranks for 36 Names and 88 Houses of Yamaguni Manor," the origin of Yamaguni Manor dates back to the time when the capital was moved to Heian. The Ritsuryo state stationed 16 officials from the Shoeifu Shoryo in Yamaguni Manor, and later 20 more officials from the Imperial Court were added. These 36 people branched off into 52 sub-houses, and a total of 88 people contributed timber called "Gosanzunmihiroaragi" (rough timber measuring 53 inches and 35 fathoms) to the state.
