New England

Japanese: ニューイングランド(英語表記)New England
New England
A collective name for the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut in the northeastern United States. In 1614, several merchants from London arrived in New England, and the captain of the ship, John Smith, named it "New England." Later, the Pilgrim Fathers, a group of Puritans, landed on Cape Cod, which led to the immigration of British, French, Germans, and others. In 1936, the schools that were the predecessors of Harvard and Yale universities were established here, making it the most culturally advanced region in the United States, and in the 18th century, it was a hotbed of the American independence movement. The entire region is bordered by the Green Mountains and the Berkshire Hills to the west, and slopes gently eastward toward the Atlantic coast, with many glacial valleys and lakes. The climate is generally cool, with an average minimum monthly temperature of -11.9°C (January) and a maximum of 23.2°C (July). Agriculture developed in the suburbs due to the proximity to large markets such as New York and Boston. The rugged coastline, with the world-famous fishing grounds of Newfoundland in front of it, promoted the development of the fishing ports of Boston and Portsmouth. From the mid-17th century, salt and iron manufacturing industries flourished, followed by shoemaking, textiles, pipes, shipbuilding and other industries, and in the 1980s it became a major center of the electronics industry. Due to a lack of resources, labor-intensive industries prevail. The main city is Boston. Area: 163,700 km2 . Population: 17,988,411 (1990).
