A village in Takaoka County in the mid-west of Kochi Prefecture. Population 1,805 (1995). The Matsuba River, an upper stream of the Shimanto River, flows south through the center of the town. Almost the entire area is covered by forests, with a few scattered plots of cultivated land along the banks of the Matsuba River, where settlements are located. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, and in addition to timber, the town produces rice, vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, and livestock. 高知県中西部,高岡郡の村。人口1805(1995)。中央部を四万十(しまんと)川の上流松葉川が南流する。ほぼ全域が山林で占められ,松葉川沿岸にわずかに耕地が点在し,集落が立地する。農林業を主とし,木材のほか,米,野菜,シイタケなどを産し,畜産も行われる。近年ショウガ,シシトウや花木の栽培が盛ん。【萩原 毅】
