…Since 1931, systematic excavations have been carried out by German architect K. Bittel. The ruins are located on a hill at the foot of a mountain overlooking a fertile river valley plain. The city was built on the site of Kārum, an Assyrian merchant settlement that existed around 1900 BCE, and consists of two parts, the north and the south. The northern part, where construction began earlier, has an irregular wall that runs around the hill for about 1,200 meters from the northwest to the southeast, and the royal castle was built along the southeastern wall.
