When a wage agreement concluded through collective bargaining between labor and management is an industry-specific or sector-specific agreement that covers many companies, if a particular company pays wages that exceed the provisions of the wage agreement, a discrepancy will occur between the actual wage rate and the agreed wage rate. This phenomenon is called wage drift. "Drift" refers to the amount paid by a particular company. Wage drift occurred from the 1960s to the early 1970s in Western European countries such as the United Kingdom and West Germany, where national or regional industry-specific wage agreements were dominant.

労使の団体交渉によって締結される賃金協約が，多数の企業を対象とする業種別または産業別協約である場合，ある特定企業が賃金協約の規定を上回る賃金を支給すると，実際の賃金率と協定賃金率にずれが生ずる。こうした現象を賃金ドリフトという。〈ドリフトdrift〉とは，ある特定企業の独自の支給分のことである。賃金ドリフトは，イギリス，西ドイツなどの全国的ないしは地域ごとの産業別賃金協約が支配的である西欧諸国において，1960年代から70年代前半にかけて発生した。
