A general term for exoprocta belonging to the Reteporidae family of Bryozoa. Also known as amigai due to its reticulate, hard calcareous body. Found in shallow seas throughout Japan, it attaches to the roots of stones and seaweed. Many microscopic individual organisms gather together to form cup-shaped colonies 2-4 cm high with net-like holes. The chambers are closely spaced, and each individual organism breathes and feeds by extending and retracting tentacles from the mouth opening at the front of the chamber. Common species include the bright orange Misakia bryozoan and the bright red Benia bryozoan, a species endemic to Japan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
