Rijksmuseum Amsterdam - Amsterdam Rijksmuseum
This museum is located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is known for its collection of Dutch paintings, mainly from the 17th century. It was based on the collection of William V of Orange, but after the French invasion in 1795, part of the collection was absorbed into the Louvre, and the remaining part was stored in the Rijksmuseum, which was established in 1800 in the summer palace Huis den Bosch, on the outskirts of The Hague. Louis Bonaparte, who became king of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1806, made Amsterdam the capital and established the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in part of the royal palace, to which 225 pieces from the Rijksmuseum in The Hague were transferred. The number of works rapidly increased after six paintings were donated by the city of Amsterdam, including the most famous "Night Watch" by Rembrandt van Rijn and "Amsterdam Volunteers Celebrating the Signing of the Peace Treaty" by Bartholomeus van der Helst. When French rule ended in 1813 and the Kingdom of the Netherlands was established, the museum was inherited by William I, and in 1815 it took on its current name. At the same time, artworks were returned from the Louvre, making the exhibition space too small, and the museum was moved to the Trippenhuys, a converted aristocrat's mansion, but in 1885 the museum as we know it today, designed by Petrus JH Cuypers and built in a Gothic and Renaissance style, opened. The museum is divided into five sections: painting, prints, sculpture and crafts, Asian art, and Dutch history. Representative works include many of Rembrandt's works, including "The Night Watch," Jan Vermeer's "The Milkmaid" and "The Letter," and Frans Hals' "The Newlyweds."
