Excerpts from the Beginning of the Study of Haikai
A book on haiku poetry. Written by Tokumoto. Published in 1641 ( Kan'ei 18 ). It defines the format of haiku poetry based on the format of Wakan Renga poetry, discusses the essence and quality of haiku poetry, explains how to craft a haiku poem, and emphasizes the importance of "haiku poetry of the heart." In the section on "Words of the Seasons and Words of Love," the author categorizes the seasonal themes of spring, summer, fall, and winter into beginning, middle, and end, and provides explanations. He lists over 80 words that contain feelings of love, and in relation to these, he writes about 49 beautiful Japanese and Chinese women and lustful men, and explains how to use them in love poems.

俳諧論書。一冊。徳元著。寛永一八年(一六四一)刊。和漢連歌の式目に準じて俳諧の式目を定め、同時に俳諧の本質・品格を論じ、一句の仕立てようを説き、「心の俳諧」を重んずべきことを述べる。次に「四季の詞(ことば)(ならびに)恋の詞」の部では春夏秋冬の季題を初中末に分類して解説を加え、恋の心をふくむことば八〇余を列挙し、それに関連して和漢の美女、好色の男四九人について記し、それらの恋句における扱い方を説いている。
