Genrin Yamaoka

[Died] June 27, 1672.
A haiku poet and author of kana zoshi in the early Edo period. His other names were Jiunsai and Rakuyo Sanjin. Born into a merchant family, he moved to Tokyo and studied haiku and Japanese studies under Kitamura Kigin. He wrote kana zoshi such as Tagaga Shinoue (1657) and Kosakazuki (72). It is said that Hyakumonogatari Hyōban (86) was also added to by later authors. His haiku anthology Hozō (71) is an early work in haiku that influenced later generations. He also compiled and wrote many haiku such as Minoraku Senku (62), Haikai Koshiki (62), Kasen Soroe (66), and Shokoku Dokuginshū (Collected Poems from Various Provinces). He also wrote commentaries on classics such as Tsurezuregusa Tetsuzui Zoho.

江戸時代前期の俳人，仮名草子作者。別号，而慍斎 (じうんさい) ，洛陽山人。商家に生れ，上京して北村季吟に俳諧，和学を学んだ。仮名草子『他我 (たが) 身の上』 (1657) ，『小巵 (こさかずき) 』 (72) の作がある。『百物語評判』 (86) も彼の作に後人が加筆したものという。俳文集『宝蔵』 (71) は俳文の初期のもので後世に影響を与えた。俳諧では『身楽 (みのらく) 千句』 (62) ，『誹諧小式』 (62) のほか，『歌仙ぞろへ』 (66) ，『諸国独吟集』など多くの編著がある。『徒然草鉄槌増補』などの古典注釈書もある。
