Born: April 12, 1839 in Smolensk [Died] November 1, 1888. Karakol. Russian explorer and Imperial Russian officer. After the Ussuri expedition in 1867-69, he undertook four expeditions to inland Asia in 1870-73, 1876-77, 1879-80, and 1883-85 with the support of the Russian Army and the Russian Geographical Society. He was the one who discovered wild camels and horses (Przhevalsky's horses). He died of illness in Karakol in 1888 while preparing for the fifth expedition. His works include Travels in Ussuri (Puteshtehstvie v Ussuriiskom krae) (1870), Mongolia and the Land of the Tanguts (Mongolia and the Land of the Tanguts) (2 volumes, 1875, 1876), Travels to Lop Nor (Ot Kul'dzhi za Tyan'-Shyan' i na Lob-nor) (1879), and From Kyakhta to the Source of the Yellow River (Ot Kyakhty na istoki Zhëltoi reki) (1888).
